Li Shih-yuan (李士元), director and attending dentist of the hospital's Stomatology Department, invented an infrared OCT mouth-scanning machine. For this, he was given the Medical Equipment Innovation, Research and Development Contribution Awards by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare. Dentists can use the OCT scanning system to see whether the calculus in between gums have all been removed, to identify early-stage cavities, and to build digital dental solutions. The machine can even identify early-stage oral cavity cancer. Taiwan's digital dentistry is truly leading trends around the globe.
